Growing from zero followers feels unfair, because the algorithm seems to favour accounts that already have an audience. The truth is more encouraging: new accounts get a genuine discovery window, because the platform wants to find out who your content is for. The creators who grow fastest from zero are not the ones with the best equipment or the luckiest viral hit; they are the ones who give the algorithm clear, consistent signals about their niche for long enough to be categorised correctly.

The first thirty days are about clarity, not virality. Pick one niche and one audience, and post four to five reels a week that all serve that audience. A new account that posts cooking on Monday, fitness on Wednesday, and comedy on Friday confuses the algorithm, because it cannot tell who to show the content to. A new account that posts five variations on one theme, such as easy weeknight dinners, gives the platform a clear picture within weeks. Narrow feels limiting, but it is the fastest route to being discovered by the right people.

Volume matters in the early days because data matters. With five reels a week, you have twenty data points after a month: which hooks held viewers, which topics earned saves, which formats got shared. With one reel a week, you have four data points, and you cannot tell signal from noise. Early volume is not about spamming; it is about learning faster. Keep the production simple, focus on one clear idea per reel, and let the feedback teach you what your audience wants before you invest in polished production.

Engagement in the first month is a two-way job. Reply to every comment, even if there are only three, because early commenters are your most valuable audience: they found you without followers, and they are telling you what resonates. Spend time engaging with creators in your niche too, not with generic comments, but with genuine reactions that make people curious about your account. Small accounts grow through community before they grow through the algorithm, and the creators who treat early followers like gold tend to keep them.

Days thirty to sixty are about doubling down on what the data shows. By now, two or three of your reels will have outperformed the rest, and the pattern is usually visible: a topic, a format, or a hook style that your audience prefers. Make more of that, in different angles, rather than chasing a new idea every time. If your easy dinner reels outperform your baking reels, post more dinners. This is not selling out; it is listening. The audience is telling you what they want, and growth comes from serving that demand well.

Days sixty to ninety are about systems and collaboration. By now you should have a posting rhythm that fits your life, a set of hook templates that work for your niche, and a small but real audience. This is the time to collaborate with creators at a similar size, through duets, joint reels, or simple shout-outs, because audiences at this stage overlap heavily and a collaboration can double both accounts' reach overnight. It is also the time to start a simple series, a recurring format viewers can return for, which turns casual viewers into followers who check back.

Expect the growth curve to be uneven, not a straight line. Most new accounts see weeks of fifty to two hundred views per reel, then a sudden jump when one reel finds its audience, then a fall back, then another jump. That pattern is normal, and it does not mean the strategy is failing. The creators who quit usually quit during a flat week, just before the algorithm has enough data to push their content wider. Ninety days is the minimum fair test for a new account, and judging it at day twenty is like judging a harvest a week after planting.

Measure the right things during those ninety days. Follower count is the least informative metric early on, because it lags behind content quality. Watch saves and shares, which signal value; watch average watch time and three-second retention, which signal whether your hooks and pacing work; and watch profile visits, which signal whether viewers want more. If those numbers improve month over month, followers will follow, usually in a sudden jump that surprises creators who were watching only the follower count. Grow the signals, and the followers come.
