Viewers decide whether to keep watching a reel in about three seconds, often faster. That means your hook is not an introduction; it is the whole first impression. A slow opening, a long greeting, or a logo animation will lose most viewers before your content even starts. The best hooks create curiosity, promise value, or show a result that makes people want to know how it happened.

The bold claim hook works by stating something surprising or useful right away. Examples include opening with the result of a transformation, a mistake to avoid, or a number that catches attention, such as a before-and-after or a common myth being wrong. The key is that the claim must be honest and must be paid off in the reel: a bold claim that leads nowhere teaches viewers not to trust your next video. Use claims you can actually deliver on within thirty seconds.

The question hook works by naming a problem the viewer already has. Opening with a question like why a reel is not getting views, or how a small creator grew quickly, makes the viewer feel the reel was made for them. Questions work best when they are specific: a vague question gets a vague reaction, while a specific question about a real frustration makes people stay to hear the answer. Follow the question immediately with a hint of the answer, not a long setup.

The visual hook skips words entirely and shows the payoff first. A finished dish, a completed transformation, a surprising reaction, or a striking image in the first frame can hold attention without a single spoken word. This works especially well for food, fitness, travel, and craft content, where the result is visually obvious. If your reel has a strong visual payoff, put it first and explain afterwards, rather than building up to it slowly.

The pattern interrupt hook breaks the scroll by being unexpected: an unusual sound, a sudden movement, a direct address to the camera, or a scene that does not match what viewers expect. The goal is to make the viewer pause for one extra second, which is often enough for the rest of the reel to take over. Pattern interrupts should still connect to the topic; a random shock that has nothing to do with the content will get a swipe as soon as viewers realise they were tricked.

Weak hooks share a pattern: they start with greetings, apologies, or background. Opening with hello everyone, welcome back, or a long explanation of what the video is about wastes the most valuable seconds. Viewers do not need to know who you are before they know why they should watch. Cut the first five seconds of most reels and you will often find the real hook hiding underneath.

The practical habit is to write the hook before filming, not after editing. Write one sentence that states the result, the problem, or the surprise, then film to deliver on that sentence. Test different hooks on similar content and compare how many viewers watch past three seconds. Over time you will learn which hook types work for your niche, and you can reuse the structure with new topics. A good hook is not a trick; it is a promise, kept quickly.

A practical way to learn hooks is to test two versions of the same reel with different openings, posted on different days. Keep the rest of the reel identical, change only the first three seconds, and compare how many viewers watch past the opening. This test isolates the hook as the only variable, so the result is genuinely informative. Many creators are surprised by which hook wins: a quiet, curious opening sometimes beats a loud, dramatic one, depending on the niche. Run this test a few times and you will build an instinct for what your specific audience responds to, which is far more valuable than copying hooks from creators in other niches.
